Chitipa United FC suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Moyale Barracks in FDH Bank Premier League encounter played at Rumphi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts showed early attacking intent, but we remained organized at the back before responding through Zenga Manda, whose powerful strike in the 7th minute forced Moyale FC goalie Jeremiah Simfukwe, into a brilliant save. The visitors continued to grow into the match and earned a free kick in a dangerous area midway through the first half, but the opportunity went begging. Moyale capitalised on a set-piece of their own moments later as Charles Nkhoma curled home a well-taken free kick in the 27th minute to hand the hosts the lead heading into the break.
We returned for the second half with renewed energy after introducing Temitope Ojenyika for Wilfred Mwakasinga. However, Moyale doubled their advantage in the 56th minute when Charles Nkhoma completed his brace after a swift attacking move. We responded positively and reduced the deficit five minutes later after Brian Singini won a penalty. Olamba Ngese stepped up confidently and converted from the spot to make it 2-1.
The game opened up as Basongo searched for an equaliser, but Mathews Masamba produced a thunderous long-range finish in the 74th minute to restore Moyale’s two-goal cushion. Despite the setback, we continued pressing and nearly scored through substitute Vitumbiko Katuya, whose effort crashed against the crossbar in added time. Zenga Manda eventually grabbed Chitipa United’s second goal in the 93rd minute after reacting quickest to a goalkeeping error, but Moyale held on to secure victory.
Speaking after the match, Chitipa United head coach Kondwa Ikwanga admitted his side did not defend well on the day but remained optimistic of improving the team’s performance.
“We failed to defend properly in some moments of the game and we were punished for that. These are mistakes we will work on and correct when we get back home,” said Ikwanga.
We will now shift focus to our next assignment at home against Civil Service United FC.
